Custom Media Spending

Recently, the Custom Content Council and ContentWise published their annual study (Characteristics Study: A Look at the Volume and Type of Content Marketing in America for 2012). According to their findings, custom media (e.g., electronic, video, etc.) companies spent a record-setting $16.6 billion in 2011. Print continues to be a mode of content delivery for 87 percent of companies.

The study also found that the number of unique printed custom titles fell roughly 20 percent, from 110,000 to 88,500. Read more here and here about the findings.

The Original Online Publishing Sins

Andrew Boer of Mediapost.com has revealed what he calls the "three great sins of online publishing." The first of these, he says, was the banner ad. The second sin was an industry-wide failure to address user privacy issues. Finally, a recent trend toward "entrepreneurial journalism (i.e., relying on authors to promote their own work) threatens to marginalize the publisher's role. Publishing Business Conference and Expo 2012

Last week, the publishing executives gathered at the annual Publishing Business Conference and Expo in New York City. Discussions focused on digital trends, content, advertising, and emerging publishing business models. For a great roundup of the conference, click here.

MPA Digital Swipe Conference

Also last week was MPA Digital Swipe, a digital conference for magazine publishers. Unlike the Publishing Business Conference and Expo, MPA Digital Swipe focuses exclusively on tablet, e-reader, app, and smartphone publishing strategy. This year, the focus was on tablet users, who are expected to number roughly 90 million by 2014. eMarketer analyst Paul Verna advised publishers to follow the wave of readers to tablets and consider that, while tablets will become more affordable and efficient, print won't.
